Bargestraat's public housing
21 Bargestraat Willemstad
On Bargest Street there is a block of multi-colored, cheerful, low-cost urban housing. These townhouses were built around the mid-19th century.
There are several stories going around explaining why all the houses on Curaçao are colored. One of these stories is that during the 19th century a doctor thought all eye problems were due to the reflection of the sun on the white houses. Then a law was approved by the governor. This law required all house owners to paint their houses a bright color. The law was valid for about 100 years but still all houses remained colored.
